👖 Denim

I’d been wearing a lot of leather but now I’m going full Canadian Tux style denim-mode after finding this nice 60s zip-up jacket in Austin (at Personal Vintage). I’ll probably still wear my leather jacket a lot but this is a nice thing to throw into the mix.

A lot of weird things have been happening to me lately.

Last week I had a dream (nightmare) that I was roommates with someone I was friends with over a decade ago. Normal dream stuff right? Well, later that day he texted me “hey man” after not speaking for years.

And today, as I sat down to write my T-Rec, I received an email (above) from someone named “T-Reks” asking me to plug his song.

The universe is trying to tell me something.
Maybe his song has the answers.

🎵 THE NEW SOUND

I did a little Interview Mag thing today where I plugged this playlist.

It features a lot of the artists from our stage at the NYC BEAT SXSW showcase such as The Hellp, Snow Strippers, MGNA Crrrta, Club Eat, Damon Rush, etc. The music is inspired by synth punk, artists like Crystal Castles, electroclash, and pop music from the late 2000s, but their take on these influences is distinctly fresh and new.

It’s only a matter of time until there’s some lame Spotify Playlist that puts a name to this new genre, but until then— it’s not “indie sleaze revival”, it’s simply THE NEW SOUND.

🎥 Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

I don’t remember a single thing that happened in this movie.

I have trouble sleeping sometimes so I like to use the ol’ Funny Pen before bed to get extra sleepy.

Well, on this one night a few months ago I had been out drinking with friends and I was on an empty-ish stomach because I had just started dieting. Needless to say, I was already feeling a little spinny when I hit the pen.

I ended up toughing out on the couch using this movie as a distraction.

Thanks Bridget Jones. You saved my life.

🧂 Salt Spray

Like a true Man™️ I only buy hair & skin products recommended to me by my barber Eric or my girlfriend Jennie. The two most important people in my life.

A while ago Jen told me to try this brand’s salt spray and I’ve been using it ever since. I like that it just adds some nice volume/messiness but it’s not stiff at all or shiny.

It’s like magic.
You’ll look carefree but you actually care enough to put product in.

Every time I see a Colville painting it gets stucks in my head for days.

It’s uncanny how his style looked so much like early computer graphics despite most of his paintings being created 30-50 years before.

I love all of his stuff but I think the one (above) of the horse running towards the train is my favorite.

A lot of people know him from this classic (below) that ended up inspiring Michael Mann’s HEAT (1995).

I also like these two (below).

They sell some decent looking prints here. Maybe I’ll get one.

For the first few months after moving to New York I’d stand on my deck before going to bed and just take it all in.

I couldn’t believe that I lived in a different city. It was so exciting and new.

But at some point I stopped, I’m not sure when or why.

I post a lot of high energy, weird, new music, but most days I just listen to music like Bill Callahan and his band Smog.

You know how some days you wake up already feeling down? Almost like the day was over before it began. Well, listening to “Jim Cain” on those quiet rainy mornings can almost make it seem okay. And remarkably this same song works for sunny but quiet hopeful mornings.

If the city is feeling too all consuming it can be nice to romanticize escaping to the country and leaving it all behind.

Or sometimes you just want to rock out to “Dress Sexy At My Funeral”

🍔 White Mana

$10 for three delicious grilled onion sliders, a small fry, + a soda, a diner made at the 1939 world fair, and staff that’s a little mean to you the whole time. I don’t think it gets any better than that.

This is White Mana is Jersey City. I loved it. Some people think the other location in Hackensack that’s spelt slightly different (“White Manna”) is better— Shy from Shy’s Burgers and Anthony Bourdain fall into that category.

I guess I’ll have to go see for myself.

😂 Prank Calls

Charlotte’s prank call recommendation on Perfectly Imperfect is one of my favorites. I’m a total sucker for them and I have many fond memories of holding back laughter listening to friends do prank calls.

Someone recently sent me Al Warren’s Instagram page where he’s been doing these great pranks. My favorite is a toss up between the McCalister’s call and this one with a health insurance rep.

Also, I’ve been a huge Tim and Eric fan forever, but I think one of the most underrated parts of their universe are their prank calls. I love this one, this one, and this one.

A friend told me this show was very formative for him.

I’ve watched a few episodes on dailymotion and can’t tell what I think.

It’s insane, over the top, funny, and seemingly has no rules.

Some of the time it annoys me. The rest of the time I think I love it.
