📕 Jesus’ Son by Denis Johnson
Jesus’ Son is a collection of poetic short stories about addiction, poverty, and crime that range from extremely dark to kind of funny and surreal. The title of the book comes from the song “Heroin” by Velvet Underground which is pretty cool. My favorite stories were “Emergency”, “Dirty Wedding”, “Beverly Home”, and “Two Men”.
Apparently they made a movie based on the book and it actually seems pretty decent in a kind-of-bad-but-good 90s disjointed indie film kind of way. Have any of you seen it?
Fun fact, Harrison wanted to talk about Jesus’ Son in the Perfectly Imperfect NYT piece but they chose a random quote about Taylor Swift instead.

I love the book and the movie is great too. Jack Black plays the orderly who pulls the knife out of the eye socket. The guy with the knife wound is played by Denis Johnson himself.
here to tell you that the only thing better than the book is the movie. or maybe it's just that the movie is *as good* as the book. it's funny how the 90s seem like so so so long ago. they were great, AND, they were long ago.
