🔨 Juiceboxxx
People who view art or music in a vortex without context are smooth-brained. Lore makes everything more interesting so I was instantly hooked when Zach Sokol told me about Juiceboxxx’s story last week.
Juiceboxxx is a musician from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who grinded in the music world for over 20 years but never saw the success he deserved. He’s best known for his insane live shows, touring with Public Enemy in 2010, this Lena Dunham co-signed book about his life, and a viral meme video.
It’s hard to not see a lot of vision and promise with songs like fresh sounding tracks such as “LIKE A MANIAC”, “OPEN UP YOUR LIFE”, “FREAKING OUT”, or 2006’s “THUNDER JAM III”. I also love his Chicago Public Television performance with all the kids.
He was ahead of his time with his proto-The Dare electroclash post punky Beastie Boys weirdo white boy flow. The world just wasn’t ready for it. We were halfway between the fall of Indie Sleaze and its current revival when Juiceboxxx was releasing most of these songs. Luck just never struck.
So it makes sense that I recently saw him praising LUCY, another outsider artist who has been hard at work for nearly a decade.
These days he’s a writer living in New York who recently reflected on this journey with Talkhouse— check it out.
Have a nice day 🫶

Update: A reader just sent me something else really cool.
”Also, if I'm not mistaken, he has an NTS show that's pretty good. I'd rec giving it a listen. Funny you bring this up because I just stumbled upon him last week.”
